The Right Way To Learn To Play Drums

Right way to start learning Drum Instrument

“It’s the first step which you need to know before starting your Drum’s journey.”

Starting anything new is daunting – and that’s true also for starting to learn Drum Instruments.

Hello, I am Abhijeet Banerjee, a Drums teacher, and I’d like to share my approach to learning the Drums.

How should my child start learning Drum Instruments?” is a question I often receive from parents when we first meet.

Today, there are many online educational platforms and several apps that teach how to play the Drums. However, I strongly feel that every aspiring drummer should learn from a good teacher – at least initially. As a teacher, I focus on the basics: how to hold drumsticks, sitting posture, stick control and the fundamentals of drumming. These, I believe, lay a solid foundation for my students to move forward musically. Once a strong foundation has been laid, my students are free to explore their musicality.

But I understand that not everyone will have access to a good Drums teacher in their area – and some people may have to turn to online resources and teaching apps to get started.

If you do go down that route, here are the steps you should take when you start your child’s Drum lessons:

  • You should have a Drum set to practise on at any time of the day. Previously, it was not always possible to play at home because of the acoustic noise of Drums, but upgraded technology has led to the development of Digital Drums (also called Electronic Drums) which you can play silently while listening to headphones.
  • It is advisable to start with hand speed and coordination exercises at the start. Pick up your drumsticks and strike away!
  • To start with, make sure that you are holding your sticks the right way and always maintain the right posture. Get either of those wrong, and you’ll develop bad habits that are hard to break – and you may also risk injuring yourself.
  • Make use of training features on Digital Drums such as coach mode, metronome and timecheck to make learning fun!

Here are some of the other questions I commonly get asked:

Are drums easy to learn to play?

My honest opinion is that Drums are one of the most natural instruments to start learning! But to become good at it, you need to practise consistently.

Can my child learn to play the drums on his/her own?

They can, but as I said, it’s ideal to start with at least a few lessons with a teacher! They can learn drums on their own by subscribing to online Drum lessons. Another valuable skill is learning the basics of reading Drum notation or sheet music.

What is the right age to start learning drums instrument?

Your child can start playing the drums whenever they want! Playing drums is a lot of fun for all ages! But yes, most experts agree that around seven years old is the right age to start. But age is just a number and many children are ready to start much younger – and, in fact, a few top professional Drummers started as young as three or four.

Which drum kit should I buy for my child?

For a beginner, I would suggest buying a budget electronic drum kit because of the many benefits –

  • They take up less space
  • No noise issues
  • They have onboard coaching tools
  • Their variety of sounds will keep children interested

Conclusion

Everyone has their own way of learning which they find most suited to them, so no one way is the best. But I would recommend getting a teacher as they can guide their students on the basics and set them up for future development. Take it from me: a good teacher also knows what’s best for his/her students!
